Awards and Honors, Academic posts

  1. Prof. Liu Dunyi is very active in international exchange and cooperation. He has a steady collaborative tie with Australia National University and University of Rennes (France). He traveled a lot overseas on academic purposes. He was also involved in the organization of international symposium. He was Chairman of the 9th ICOG (1998, Beijing), Chairman of the 9th BCEIA (Beijing, 2001) and Member of Honourary Committee of the 30th IGC (Beijing, 1996).

Scientific Research Projects

  1. (1)Prof. Liu Dunyi has been engaged in the study of isotope geochronology for as long as 50 years, and has focused on the Precambrian and high-grade metamorphic rock (eclogite and granulite) in many regions such as Wutaishan-Taihangshan, eastern Hebei, Anshan, Jiaodong, northestern Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Qinling-Dabashan and Dabie Mountains. In the late 1980s’ he obtained the oldest zircon age (≥3850 Ma) and the oldest rock age (≥3800 Ma) with MAT261 in China and SHRIMP I at the Australia National University. These results are among the most significant achievements of the Precambrian geology and metamorphic geology research in the country, and have been paid much attention by the geological community overseas. In the recent years, he has gained new progress in his work and discovered that metamorphic zircon has a property of multiple crystal domain when he made isotope chronological study on the Dabie HP-UHP metaporphic belt.

(2)Prof. Liu Dunyi is well experienced in spectrometry technology, and well accomplished in isotope geochronology. He originated a number of age-dating methods in China, such as conventional and single grain zircon U-Pb dating method. He is the first person that introduced SHRIMP into China. As SHRIMP II was imported to the country and installed in his lab 10 years ago, he has done well in zircon and monazite age dating and zircon REE determination.

(3)Prof. Liu was responsible for the research project “A Demonstrative Research for SHRIMP Remote Operation System (SROS)”. He has successfully shown that zircon U-Pb SHRIMP analysis can be performed using remote control through the Internet. This is the first case worldwide that such operation was achieved through the Internet on a high-resolution ion microprobe. At present, SROS has won wide recognition and enjoyed great prestige in the international geological community. Remote operating work stations have now been set up in several places, including Yichang Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, Nanjing University, the University of Saõ Paolo, Brazil, the Ontario Geological Survey in Sudbury, Canada, University of Milan- Bicocca, Italy, Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia, Academia Sinica, Taipei and the University of Hong Kong . Prof. Liu’s philosophy of “resource-sharing” of SHRIMP II is now becoming gradually realized.
